Manny Pacquia and his fight legacy

Posted on November 24th, 2009 by s.e. oh - boy

Born in the province of of Bukidnon in the Philippines, Manny Pacquia was as humble as any baby born in the provinces of a third world country. Like any responsible boy growing up in the province, Manny grew up having to earn his way through school and the day to day necessities of food. To survive, Pacquia did everything from selling pandesal to construction work to selling balut. Early on, Manny had the affinity for boxing. Regardless of the hours he spent trying to earn his keep, he made sure that he could train everyday for a weekly boxing tournament in his province.

Less than 15 years later, Manny Pacquia is on the cover of Time Magazine and has broken the world record for winning championship belts for seven different weight classes. Who would have thought that such a humble, hardworking boy from the province would arguably be the best boxer of all time.

To pay homage to our great hero, listed below are the belts that turned Manny into the world renowned fighter that he is:

  • WBC Flyweight Title : KO-8 Chatchai Sasakul (December 4, 1998)
  • IBF Junior Featherweight Title : TKO-6 Lehlohonolo Ledwaba (June 23, 2001)
  • WBO Junior Featherweight Titles : TD-6 Agapito Sanchez (November 10, 2001)
  • Ring Magazine Featherweight Championship: TKO-11 Marco Antonio Barrera (November 15, 2003)
  • WBC Junior Lightweight Title: SD-12 Juan Manuel Marquez (March 15, 2008)
  • WBC Lightweight Title: TKO-9 David Diaz (June 28, 2008)
  • Ring Magazine Junior Welterweight Championship: KO-2 Ricky Hatton (May 2, 2009)
  • WBO welterweight championship/WBC Diamond belt:TKO-12 Miguel Cotto (Nov. 14, 2009)

Who could also forget his win against the legendary Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya.

Manny Pacquia has already carved his name in History with his achievements in boxing, but we all know he’s not done yet. There’s still that unbeaten ex best pound for pound best fighter in Floyd Mayweather Jr. I guess we’ll have to wait for that one.
