Street Art Graffiti – Limatik’s top 5 artists

Posted on November 24th, 2009 by turrboleach

Billboard advertising and Art. These 2 things have a lot of similarities. One is that both are more or less meant to visually stimulate us. The second similarity is that both these fields are highly lucrative businesses. It’s all about the money as they say. For companies aiming to profit with advertising, it’s as simple as buying out all possible spaces our eyes can look at. It’s as if we now have no choice but to absorb whatever is fed to us by these advertisements. For artists, all they have to do is follow the next fad in the art world for them to be able to sell their art. Sometimes I wonder if a lot of artists nowadays have intentions other than making money.

This is why I have nothing but respect for graffiti artists. They take these spaces otherwise paid for by big corporations and replace profit minded advertisements with visuals that push boundaries of creativity. They do this despite the risk of being caught, despite the fact that they earn nothing, and they also know that what they put up on a wall today might just easily be destroyed or erased the next day.

For this list, Ill focus on the street art side of graffiti: the painters, photographers, and visual artists. Here are my top five favorites:

  1. BLU

  5. swoon

I purposely didn’t put any captions or explanations as to who these artists are and where they came from. The art they create expresses enough as it is without necessary fluff or hype. You can go click on the pictures or sources to learn more about them.

A lot of people may also have different views on their top 5 artists. Many people will say maybe Banksy or Basquiat or WK interact or Shepard Fairey or Blek le Rat. Don’t get me wrong, these guys are great. I’m just basing this article on my own personal preference.

Feel free to leave a comment and give your favorites. Cheers!

Great street art. I’ve seen some done by an artist who painted on steel doors that covered stores or shops. The paintings gave color and life to a very sterile and barren scene on the street. This was many years ago, before internet hit its popularity.

Thanks for the visit on my blog.

great art… when I saw street graffiti in the title, it came to mind that all I was going to see were hip-hop themed art with all the “bling” but the art in the list are true artists that used different styles. COOL!

the problem with street art/graffiti is that they cannot be exhibited inside an enclosed room. and the so-called “art patrons” only go to galleries made of cement and painted in gold and the floors covered in red carpets, with waiters serving cocktails. it’s a sad fact that only a few actually appreciate real art in real life. and as people/academicians are wont to do, art is now divided by categories, each classified and grouped, thus losing each piece’s own personality.
it’s good to see pictures of real life art, such as these, spreading along the web. it supports total freedom for the artists :)

What do you think?
